3 Things You Should Do To Your Home Now
The weather is finally showing signs that summer is ending and winter will soon be here. Temperatures are beginning to cool and the leaves are about to transform into vibrant reds, oranges and yellows before dropping to the ground. Before this happens and the cold, snow and ice sets in throughout our area, homeowners should take a few steps to get the outside of their home ready to handle the upcoming season.
Although you might prefer to enjoy the beauty of fall by doing something fun rather than working around the house, consider that anything you do now is something that you won’t have to do when spring finally starts to rear its head after you’ve been cooped up indoors for months. If you get some of your outdoor work done now, you can spend those first few weeks of spring having the fun you think you’ll be missing out on now.
It’s also a good idea to get things done around the house that need to get done sooner rather than later. That’s because sometimes things left undone turn into problems before you have a chance to address them. For example, if you know you have low spots near the side of your home and do nothing about them now, you may be dealing with a flooded basement once snow and ice begin to melt after a big winter storm.
So what should you think about doing now to keep the exterior of your house in good condition? Here are a few things to consider:
- Check for low spots around your foundation. Before you deal with pooling water or interior leaking or flooding ,make sure any low spots around your house are properly built up to slope away from the foundation. You may need to order a bunch of dirt to build up the area or may be able to get away with just re-sloping the materials that are already there.
- Deal with any areas of poor drainage. Not only is water an issue near your home’s foundation, but it can be a problem almost anywhere if the ground doesn’t drain properly. If re-sloping the ground doesn’t work, you may have to first dig up an area and fill it in with some crushed stone to help improve drainage. If you have a major water problem, it may be best to hire a professional to install a drainage system.
- Prepare your planting beds. You may think spring or summer are the only times you should work on your landscaping, but now is also a good time, depending on what you’re doing. If you use gravel to accent landscaping beds, adding more now will not be wasted because the gravel will not disintegrate over the winter. Mulch can help protect plants from the harsh winter if you add some to your beds in the fall. Fall is also a great time to plant most trees and bushes.
