crushed stone use projects

There are many uses for crushed stone, with uses varying depending on the sizes of the stone in any particular batch.  Although referred to as crushed, not all options involve very small, fine pieces of stone.  Rather you can select from a rather finely ground stone dust, with particles too small to uniformly measure as wells as options that contain individuals stones that are 2 ½” or more in size.  As you can imagine, there will be very different uses for a pile of stone that is practically ground into dust as compared to a similar pile of stone that can be defined by one or two inch individual pieces.

Some of the finest and smallest varieties of crushed stone are used to make asphalt.  They can also be used as a base for concrete pavers and other types of paving blocks or as a base for walkways, bike paths and driveways.   You’ll even find stone screenings used in horse arenas.

As you get to some of the still small but more moderate sizes of the material, such as 3/8” or 5/8” sizes, you’ll also find that the stones can be used to mix with asphalt.  Additionally, this size can be used for driveways or for drainage purposes.  These stones can also be used on walkways or pathways and are commonly seen as a decorative element in landscaping designs.

Once you get into larger sizes then this, you will likely not see the stones used in any capacity in which you need a smooth and compact base where you are directly walking on it, such as walkways or pathways.  Rather, you’ll see stones that are 3/4” or more being used in a variety of drainage applications.  You’ll also see these larger sizes, including DGA and QP stones, being used as a base material for roads, pavers and driveways or as a base for gabion or interlocking walls.  We’re talking here about some more heavy-duty sized stones that can serve as a base for some serious construction and that offer great drainage properties.

Just as there are many types of construction, landscaping and drainage projects, so too are there many varieties of crushed stone.  However no matter what the size is that you need to meet your project needs, the make-up of the material is the same.  The stone is quarried from something known as trap rock, which is a natural source of volcanic extrusion igneous basalt, giving it its telltale dull gray color.  It is then processed using a crusher to turn it into specific sized stones to suit a variety of different purposes.
