Do You Have Enough Rock Salt?

Do you have enough rock salt

The winter of 2015-2016 certainly started off on the mild side, with many predicting that temperatures would be higher than normal and snowfall would be lower than is typically seen in the Northeast thanks to an El Nino winter.  However, it’s easy to see how just a single storm can leave municipalities, businesses and residents paralyzed if they are not prepared.

The Blizzard of 2016, also referred to as Winter Storm Jonas, dumped record or nearly record amounts of snowfall on the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, from New York to Washington D.C.  If you were not prepared with an ample supply of rock salt in time for the storm, you likely have found yourself dealing with icy roads, parking lots and pavement.  This can result in a dangerous situation.

When storms dump nearly two feet of snow (or more), cleaning up after the storm is certainly a plowing operation.  The huge mounds of snow need to be cleared from driveways, parking lots, sidewalks, and of course, roadways.  But if the underlying pavement was not treated prior to the first snowflakes falling to the ground or after the piles of snow have been cleared, what’s left on the surface can quickly turn to ice when temperatures fall below freezing.  Icy roads lead to treacherous driving conditions, while slick walking surfaces can lead to dangerous falls.  Untreated surfaces can also leave business owners open to lawsuits if individuals are injured as a result of the lack of proper treatment.

Although it’s too late to prepare for what will likely be the biggest storm of the season, there’s no doubt that it’s not too late to be sure that you have adequate amounts of rock salt and/or other snow melt materials on hand for the remainder of the season. If you are a property owner or are in charge of keeping residents safe in a town or throughout a residential complex, it’s important to be sure that you have enough materials on hand to treat driving and walking surfaces prior to and after any expected winter precipitation.

For those that do not already have a supply of rock salt on hand or do not have easy access to what they need when the need arises, there are companies that can deliver rock salt in bulk quantities throughout the NY metropolitan area and in New Jersey.  Even though winter may be halfway over, it’s not too late to order what you need.  Be prepared for the next winter storm by ordering your rock salt today.
