Uses: River gravel is comprised of rounded stones that have been smoothed by the flow of water over time. The stones come in an array of different colors, as well as a wide range of sizes. The 1/4" variety has been sized through a series of screens so that all stones in the mix are approximately 1/4 inches in size. Due to the small size of this variety, it is sometimes also referred to as pea gravel. The attractive color palette and smooth surface of the stones makes Delaware River gravel a desired material in outdoor landscaping and hardscaping projects, where the stone can impart beauty as well as functionality. Some of the most common uses include:
- Gardens and planting beds. The decorative material is used in place of mulch to add visual appeal, help with drainage and prevent the growth of weeds (though a weed barrier should be installed first for this purpose).
- Walkways and pathways. The material can be used on its own or as filler between larger stepping stones. The smooth surface makes it easy to walk on, as long as depth is kept to a maximum of 2 – 3 inches.
- River gravel driveways are functional as well as beautiful but the small round stones should only be up to 2 – 3” deep for maximum usability.
- Patios, playgrounds and dog runs. These attractive smooth stones have many uses.
