Uses For 3/8” Pea Gravel:

Pea gravel consists of natural rounded stones that are sized through a series of screens so that all stones in a mix are predominantly the same size. In the case of the 3/8” variety, these screens ensure that the stones in the mix are all approximately 3/8 of an inch in size, or about the size of a pea (hence, the name). Due to their small size, smooth surface and attractive color palette, yellow pea gravel is primarily used in outdoor landscaping and hardscaping projects where the stone can impart beauty as well as functionality.

Some of the most common uses include:

  • As a decorative landscaping cover in gardens and planting beds, in place of mulch. It can also help with drainage and prevent the growth of weeds (though a weed barrier should be used as an underlayment).
  • For walkways and pathways, either by itself or as a filler material between larger stepping stones.
  • As an attractive driveway material. Pea gravel driveways are less expensive than other decorative driveway options and provide a functional yet beautiful space that can be walked or driven on (depth should be limited to 2 – 3 inches).
  • For patios, playgrounds and dog runs.
  • 3/8” pea gravel can also be used in sub-surface gas tank installations, although due to its beauty, it is predominantly used above ground.

3/8” pea gravel is found in residential and commercial properties alike and is often used by homeowners, landscapers, landscape suppliers, landscape design companies, nurseries, garden centers, builders, private contractors and parks departments.
